The Honorable Jeff Pyle,
Veterans Designation Now Available on PA Driver Licenses, ID Cards, Pyle Says
FORD CITY – Rep. Jeff Pyle (R-Armstrong/Indiana) today announced that veterans across Pennsylvania will now be able to obtain a driver license or PennDOT identification card which indicates their military service. The program was created due to the passage of Act 176, formerly House Bill 2428, which Pyle authored.

Under Act 176 of 2012, the veterans designation is made available to persons producing valid honorable military discharge papers. To qualify, an applicant would have to be a person who has served in the United States Armed Forces, including a reserve unit or the National Guard, and who was discharged or released from such service under conditions other than dishonorable.

“Pennsylvanians have a long history of serving this nation,” Pyle said. “Hundreds of thousands of veterans live in this state and I am proud to have played a part in making this designation a reality for these men and women.”

The designation will allow veterans easier access to benefits and services, as well as veterans appreciate discounts offered by retailers. However, further documentation will still be required for veterans to obtain VA benefits.

“The military only provides veteran identification cards to those who have retired, which requires 20 to 30 years of active service,” Pyle added. “Other veterans would need to carry their discharge papers with them to receive discounts and other benefits. With this designation, now all they need to do is show their driver license or identification card.”

The designation is available to eligible veterans at no charge at the next date of renewal of their license or ID card. If veterans want the designation prior to their next renewal, they will have to pay a fee for a duplicate license. The fee for a basic duplicate driver license is $13.50; fees for other types of licenses vary.
