The Honorable Jeff Pyle, jpyle@pahousegop.com
Pyle Tapped to Lead Gaming Oversight Panel
1/8/2018
HARRISBURG – Now in his 13th year serving the 60th Legislative District, Rep. Jeff Pyle (R-Armstrong/Butler/Indiana) has been selected to chair the House Gaming Oversight Committee. First sworn into office in 2004, Pyle has been and continues to be a strong, commonsense voice for his constituents, energy jobs that are the economic base of western Pennsylvania and our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.

Being named chairman of a major committee required that Pyle give up some other of his previous committee assignments, so Pyle has stepped down from his posts on the Appropriations and Judiciary committees, but will retain his slot on the House Energy and Environmental Resources panel that is so important to the economies of Armstrong, Butler and Indiana counties.

“In terms of economic impact, Pennsylvania is second biggest gaming state in the U.S., only being overshadowed by Nevada, and we bring in more tax revenue from gaming than any other state,” Pyle said. “Since the legalization of casino gaming in Pennsylvania, the industry has generated more than $11 billion in tax revenue and now employs 18,000 individuals. As we move forward, I would like to explore how we can find practical solutions to tavern gaming issues, letting clubs keep more of their own money and gaming that seeks to benefit charities and fire companies.”

The Gaming Oversight Committee is responsible for overseeing Pennsylvania's gaming industry, including the dealings of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The committee is required to carefully examine all future legislation regarding gaming and the state’s gambling industry before it reaches the full House of Representatives for consideration. The committee also reviews regulations to make certain they are consistent with the legislative intent of Act 71 of 2004 and Act 135 of 2006 the recently enacted gaming expansion bill (Act 42 of 2017), which authorized internet gaming, fantasy sports, video gaming terminals at truck stops, airport gaming tablets and the auctioning of 10 new mini casino licenses.

“This is a great opportunity and I look forward to consulting with my Democrat counterpart on the committee, Rep. Pat Harkins and meeting with the state Gaming Control Board for updates on how the most recent gaming laws are working and how our license auctions are going,” Pyle said.
