The Honorable Jeff Pyle,
Pyle Introduces 1 Percent for Property Tax Relief Bill

Saying property taxes statewide are still too high, State Rep. Jeff Pyle (R-Armstrong and Indiana Counties) has introduced legislation to use proceeds from the state sales tax to alleviate the property tax burden on Pennsylvanians.

Pyle’s legislation would increase the sales tax by 1 percent and use all the proceeds for property tax relief. One percent in sales tax is estimated to raise $1.5 billion in revenues annually.
“I’ll be pushing for my 1 percent bill to alleviate school property taxes,” Pyle said. “I know it’s not elimination, but it’s going the right direction and better than the minimal, modest plan pushed by the higher-ups last year.”
Pyle expects his legislation, if passed, would reduce school property taxes by an average of more than $1,000 for property owners across the state. His legislation has built-in protections against future property tax increases that would wipe out the savings for residents.
“I remain committed to the eventual elimination of school property taxes in favor of sales-tax-based solutions,” Pyle said. “My 1 percent bill is about property tax protection and is the first of its kind.”
“With the Governor expressing interest in greater property tax reductions, I must condition my constituents with this … although I am gratified with his interests, I will support my own bill only if every penny of the sales tax increase goes only to property tax relief. I will not support any other use.
