The Honorable Jeff Pyle,
Local Firefighters Recognized During 117th Annual Firemen’s Convention, Says Pyle

Kiskiminetas Township, Armstrong County, was the setting of the 117th Annual Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association Convention, which wrapped up on Aug. 10, said Rep. Jeff Pyle (R-Armstrong/Indiana).

During the five-day event, nearly 1,000 volunteer firefighters gathered in the local area to recognize the bravery and service of their fellow comrades.

“It was a pleasure to welcome firefighters throughout western Pennsylvania to Armstrong County,” Pyle said.  “The residents of Kiski Township welcomed these men and women to their neighborhood and made them feel right at home.”

He noted that members of Kiski Township Fire Department No. 1 Company 140 were honored to host the convention, which featured the first parade in North Apollo since 1988.

Several awards and scholarships were presented during the banquet held on Tuesday at the Apollo Free Methodist Church.  Paul Shaner, of Hose Company No. 6 Kittanning, was awarded the Fireman of the Year Award, and Zach Kline, also of Hose Company No. 6 Kittanning, was named Junior Firefighter of the Year.  Volunteer firefighter Ashlee Pavetti of Kiski Township was awarded a college scholarship from the association.  In addition, Pyle was recognized as an official “Friend of the Firemen” by being selected for the 2010 Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association Award.

“I am humbled by this recognition and grateful to the Firemen’s Association for choosing me for this prestigious award,” Pyle said.  “Our volunteer firefighters go above and beyond the call of duty to protect our lives and our properties.  The recognition bestowed upon Paul, Zach and Ashlee is well deserved and is an indication of the dedication of our local first responders.”

The Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association has a membership of approximately 10,000 firefighters from nearly 500 fire departments throughout Pennsylvania.  The organization holds monthly meetings in the western part of the state to discuss issues that relate to fire service.

“This year’s event brought together firefighters from western Pennsylvania to build camaraderie while also providing them invaluable industry updates and training,” Pyle said.  “I’d like to thank the men and women of Kiski Township Fire Department for a job well done at hosting this event.”
